The foundation aims to promote sport generally within the Sutherland Shire and assist sportsmen and women, 19 years and younger, who may be disadvantaged.
Modelled on the successful ‘Bullfrog Moore Foundation’ in the Canterbury Bankstown district, the emphasis is on the promotion of young sportsmen and women and teams which may be under some financial, social or other impediment that could prevent the realisation of their full potential.
Foundation director Gary Wicks says it carries the name of a “highly commendable person” in the late Monty Porter.
Monty was not only a former St George premiership winner, Cronulla Sharks’ first captain and a hard-working Cronulla Sutherland club committee man, but away from the game of league he worked hard to help young sports people. All individuals, teams and organisations will be eligible for assistance such as travel expenses, equipment, accommodation, coaching and education fees. Federal and state politicians, Sutherland Shire councillors, company, shire sporting representatives on board, attended the launch of our foundation held at The Como Hotel in February 2012, along with members of Monty Porter’s family. Radio personality Darryl Brohman was the MC, assisted by speakers from all walks of Monty Porter’s life.
